Who is Superior Flight School and Why Choose SFS?
Nestled in the heart of Kennesaw, Georgia, Superior Flight School (SFS) has been training pilots to be Superior since 2001. Operating out of Cobb County International Airport (RYY), they offer a comprehensive range of flight training programs approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). An aspiring pilot can walk through the doors of SFS with only their dream of becoming a pilot, and leave ready to confidently take on the skies.
Superior Flight School features a growing fleet of ten Cessna 172 Skyhawks for single-engine training, and a Diamond DA 42 for multi-engine training, each equipped with a G1000 Glass cockpit avionics system. These modern aircraft provide student pilots with hands-on experience using the latest aviation technology found in today’s modern commercial aircraft. Along with the fleet of aircraft Superior offers, through their distinguished academic partnerships with Liberty University and Purdue Global, students can seamlessly integrate their flight training while also earning a degree in Aviation at either institution.
What truly sets Superior Flight School apart is their approach to flight training. SFS is one of the few flight schools approved by the FAA to offer a “Reduced Minimums” commercial license, and maintains self-examining authority. This means that they have their own designated check airmen who provide students with the FAA flight exam in-house, allowing for a quicker process of obtaining one’s certification and eliminating the need to coordinate with external examiners. The school also maintains a dedicated team of instructors who provide personalized attention to each student pilot, while an on-site maintenance team ensures that all aircraft are kept in peak operating condition. Lastly and perhaps the most favorably, the school’s location at a low-traffic towered airport provides the perfect training environment, allowing students to focus on their flying without a more congested airspace typically found at busier airports.
Superior Flight School is home to several aspiring pilots who have different backgrounds and specialities, allowing the atmosphere to remain inclusive and feel welcoming. SFS maintains eligibility with the VA, and continues to look to create as many new opportunities for students as possible, to help them become successful in the aviation field with as much funding as possible. These benefits can be applied to flight training after obtaining a Private Pilot License. Superior Flight School’s professional flight training program is approved for Veterans training under the GI Bill as well. However, SFS recommends contacting the VA directly for further information.
In addition to maintaining eligibility with the VA, Superior Flight School introduces Breakturn. Breakturn is an intermediary between active duty service members transitioning to their next job and the aviation industry. Breakturn provides opportunities, designs, and manages programs for Service Members during their last 180 days of active duty. Breakturn assists in finding the right internship, apprenticeship, or training path to achieve the Veteran’s goal in the aviation industry. Oftentimes Veterans carry skills that will directly relate to what they want to do after the Military, however if they are looking to develop new skills, that is okay too. Breakturn provides the opportunity for Veterans to work with industry professionals who are happy to develop a new skill and/or polish their skills and recognize their value as a Service Member beyond their technical field. There are many financial benefits to working with Breakturn that will essentially help with one’s flight training. Breakturn is a Department of Labor and Department of Defense (DoD) approved and authorized via Title 10 USC. Ultimately the DoD’s goal is to gain post-service employment with a host company or another company. It is important to remember that while with Breakturn, Service Members maintain all pay and benefits, and are not allowed to accept salary. Breakturn is a DoD authorized third-party Skillbridge provider which gives partners instant access to the DoD program without navigating the DoD bureaucracy. Their unique model allows the primary to focus to be on one sole industry… the aviation industry, and is the only third-party provider with career counseling specialists that precise Skillbridge placement based on a particular Service Member’s qualifications, wants, and needs.
As a dedicated flight school, SFS recognizes that scholarships are a valuable source of financial aid for domestic student pilots. While it is not a four-year university, they actively help students pursue scholarship opportunities that provide funding without the burden of repayment, allowing aspiring pilots to focus on their training rather than financial concerns. The aviation industry offers numerous scholarship opportunities through various organizations dedicated to supporting both current and future pilots.
Everyone who walks through the doors of Superior Flight School has one common goal and it is to become a pilot, and for some, it is to fly for a major commercial airline. Take time early on to thoroughly research not only the flight school, but also the airline, to understand the qualifications and certifications required to be a pilot for that specific airline. Are there preferred pathways to take to get to that specific airline? (i.e. United Aviate). SFS is a United Aviate partnered flight school. Students can apply to be a part of the United Aviate program as soon as they obtain their Private Pilot Certificate.
